Rhynchodercetis hakelensis
More Information
Rhynchodercetis hakelensis

Middle Cretaceous (112 m.y.o.)
Sublithographic Limestone
Lebanon

Large and exotic "Needle fish", with its last meal preserved in the stomach area. Skeleton measures 29" long and tummy fish measures 4 1/4" long. Matrix is 25" x 12 1/2". The mis-alignment of the needle beak is the result of a micro-fault in the matrix. The skeletal completeness and articulation of the tummy fish indicates that it was swallowed right before the needle fish's death and was most likely the cause of the large fish's death. Apparently it was too large to digest, or the smaller fish fatally damaged some of its internal organs. Specimen has EXCELLENT detail and tells the story of life and death in the Cretaceous ocean.
