Trace Fossils, i.e., tracks, trails, burrows, etc. are known as Ichnofossils. The science and study of trace fossils is called Paleoichnology.

Trace Fossils are indirect evidence of ancient life. The majority of invertebrate tracks, trail and burrows reflect some sort of animal behavior.

The study of trace fossils is a very complex and challenging discipline. A few simple definitions are listed below, but for more in-depth information, check out the sites listed.

Definitions

TRACKS: Impressions left in soft sediment by the feet or appendages of animals.

TRAILS: Continuous markings left by an organism as it moved over the soft sediment.

BURROWS: Any biogenic activity that involves excavation of unconsolidated soft sediment by an organism.

Fish Trace Fossil
More Information
Multiple trail and trackway slab
Pennsylvanian (305 m.y.o.)
Hartshorne Sandstone

Large and impressive sandstone slab with extensive trace fossil activity. This huge slab measures 42" tall x 19" wide and 1" thick. Overall length of the huge slug-like mollusk trail is 41" long and 4" wide. This style of trail is similar to Climactichnites. The smaller meandering trail that follows and crosses the larger one is associated with small mollusk bi-valves. Tracks and trails are extremely well defined and have substantial relief with matrix. This slab is very colorful, with a hint of lavender in the rock. All natural -- no enhancement. Tells a great story!
